attach_session_information filter

Can be used to attach further information to a session.

To use the attach_session_information filter, first, you have to register it using add_filter. You can write this code into the functions.php of your activated theme or in a custom WordPress Plugin.

We at WePlugins always prefer to create a custom WordPress Plugin while using hooks so nothing breaks when you update your WordPress Theme in the future.

In the below live examples, we have defined a function modify_attach_session_information_defaults which takes 2 parameters and we registered it using add_filter. The first parameter attach_session_information is the name of the hook, the second parameter modify_attach_session_information_defaults is the name of the function which needs to be called, the third parameter is the priority of calling the hook if the same hook is used multiple times and the last parameter is the number of arguments (if any) to be passed in the registered function.

Sometimes, you have to remove a registered hook so you can use remove_filter to remove the attach_session_information filter.

Parameters

    Below are the 2 parameters required to use this hook.

  • $session: (array) Array of extra data.
  • $user_id: (int) User ID.

Live Example

apply_filters('attach_session_information', array $session, int $user_id)

Below are examples of how you can use this hook.

Example 1: Modifying Session Information

In this example, we modify the session information based on custom requirements.

    function weplugins_modify_attach_session_information_defaults($session, $user_id) {
        // Update the $session variable according to your website requirements and return this variable.
        $session['custom_data'] = 'Custom Value';
        return $session;
    }
    // add the filter
    add_filter("attach_session_information", "weplugins_modify_attach_session_information_defaults", 10, 2);

Example 2: Adding User Meta to Session

This example demonstrates how to add user meta information to the session data.

    function weplugins_add_user_meta_to_session($session, $user_id) {
        $user_meta = get_user_meta($user_id, 'custom_meta_key', true);
        $session['user_meta'] = $user_meta;
        return $session;
    }
    // add the filter
    add_filter("attach_session_information", "weplugins_add_user_meta_to_session", 10, 2);

Example 3: Removing a Hook Callback

To remove a previously added hook callback, use the example below.

    remove_filter("attach_session_information", "weplugins_modify_attach_session_information_defaults", 10, 2);

Please make sure to provide the same callback function name, priority, and number of arguments while removing the hook callback.
