bulk_post_updated_messages filter

By default, custom post types use the messages for the ‘post’ post type.

To use the bulk_post_updated_messages filter, first you have to register it using add_filter. You can write this code into functions.php of your activated theme or in a custom WordPress Plugin.

We at WePlugins, always prefer to create a custom WordPress Plugin while using hooks so nothing breaks when you update your WordPress Theme in the future.

In the below live example, we have defined a function modify_bulk_post_updated_messages_defaults which takes 2 parameters and we registered it using add_filter. The first parameter bulk_post_updated_messages is the name of the hook, the second parameter modify_bulk_post_updated_messages_defaults is the name of the function which needs to be called, the third parameter is the priority of calling the hook if the same hook is used multiple times, and the last parameter is the number of arguments (if any) to be passed in the registered function.

Sometimes, you have to remove a registered hook so you can use remove_filter to remove the bulk_post_updated_messages filter.

Parameters

    Below are the 2 parameters required to use this hook.

  • $bulk_messages: (array[]) Arrays of messages, each keyed by the corresponding post type. Messages are keyed with ‘updated’, ‘locked’, ‘deleted’, ‘trashed’, and ‘untrashed’.
  • $bulk_counts: (int[]) Array of item counts for each message, used to build internationalized strings.

Live Example

Example 1: Basic Usage

In this example, we modify the bulk updated messages for a custom post type.

    add_filter( 'bulk_post_updated_messages', 'weplugins_bulk_post_updated_messages_filter', 10, 2 );
    function weplugins_bulk_post_updated_messages_filter( $bulk_messages, $bulk_counts ) {
        $bulk_messages['my_cpt'] = array(
            'updated'   => _n( '%s my_cpt updated.', '%s my_cpts updated.', $bulk_counts['updated'] ),
            'locked' => _n( '%s my_cpt not updated, somebody is editing it.', '%s my_cpts not updated, somebody is editing them.', $bulk_counts['locked'] ),
            'deleted'   => _n( '%s my_cpt permanently deleted.', '%s my_cpts permanently deleted.', $bulk_counts['deleted'] ),
            'trashed'   => _n( '%s my_cpt moved to the Trash.', '%s my_cpts moved to the Trash.', $bulk_counts['trashed'] ),
            'untrashed' => _n( '%s my_cpt restored from the Trash.', '%s my_cpts restored from the Trash.', $bulk_counts['untrashed'] ),
        );
        return $bulk_messages;
    }

Example 2: Advanced Usage

Here’s how you can modify the bulk messages conditionally based on post type.

    function weplugins_modify_bulk_post_updated_messages_defaults($bulk_messages, $bulk_counts) {
        if ( isset($bulk_messages['my_cpt']) ) {
            // Update the messages for 'my_cpt'
            $bulk_messages['my_cpt'] = array(
                'updated'   => _n( '%s my_cpt updated.', '%s my_cpts updated.', $bulk_counts['updated'] ),
                'locked' => _n( '%s my_cpt not updated, somebody is editing it.', '%s my_cpts not updated, somebody is editing them.', $bulk_counts['locked'] ),
                'deleted'   => _n( '%s my_cpt permanently deleted.', '%s my_cpts permanently deleted.', $bulk_counts['deleted'] ),
                'trashed'   => _n( '%s my_cpt moved to the Trash.', '%s my_cpts moved to the Trash.', $bulk_counts['trashed'] ),
                'untrashed' => _n( '%s my_cpt restored from the Trash.', '%s my_cpts restored from the Trash.', $bulk_counts['untrashed'] ),
            );
        }
        return $bulk_messages;
    }
    // add the filter
    add_filter( "bulk_post_updated_messages", "weplugins_modify_bulk_post_updated_messages_defaults", 10, 2 );

Example 3: Removing the Hook

To remove a hook callback, use the example below.

    remove_filter( "bulk_post_updated_messages", "weplugins_modify_bulk_post_updated_messages_defaults", 10, 2 );

Please make sure you provide the same callback function name, priority, and number of arguments while removing the hook callback.
