comment_cookie_lifetime filter

Filters the lifetime of the comment cookie in seconds.

To use the comment_cookie_lifetime filter, first you have to register it using add_filter. You can write this code into the functions.php of your activated theme or in a custom WordPress Plugin.

We at WePlugins always prefer to create a custom WordPress Plugin while using hooks so nothing breaks when you update your WordPress Theme in the future.

In the below live example, we have defined a function weplugins_modify_comment_cookie_lifetime_defaults which takes 1 parameter and we registered using add_filter. The first parameter comment_cookie_lifetime is the name of the hook, the second parameter weplugins_modify_comment_cookie_lifetime_defaults is the name of the function which needs to be called, the third parameter is the priority of calling the hook if the same hook is used multiple times, and the last parameter is the number of arguments (if any) to be passed in the registered function.

Sometimes, you have to remove a registered hook so you can use remove_filter to remove the comment_cookie_lifetime filter.

Parameters

    Below the 1 parameter is required to use this hook.

  • $seconds : (int) Comment cookie lifetime. Default 30000000.

Live Example

apply_filters( 'comment_cookie_lifetime', int $seconds )

Below is an example of how you can use this hook.

	function weplugins_modify_comment_cookie_lifetime_defaults($seconds) {
		// Update the $seconds variable according to your website requirements and return this variable. You can modify the $seconds variable conditionally too if you want.
		return $seconds;
	}
	// add the filter
	add_filter( "comment_cookie_lifetime", "weplugins_modify_comment_cookie_lifetime_defaults", 10, 1 );

To remove a hook callback, use the example below.

	remove_filter( "comment_cookie_lifetime", "weplugins_modify_comment_cookie_lifetime_defaults", 10, 1 );

Please make sure to provide the same callback function name, priority, and number of arguments while removing the hook callback.

Example 1: Extending Cookie Lifetime

This example shows how to extend the comment cookie lifetime to one year.

	function weplugins_extend_comment_cookie_lifetime($seconds) {
		return 31536000; // 1 year in seconds
	}
	add_filter( "comment_cookie_lifetime", "weplugins_extend_comment_cookie_lifetime", 10, 1 );

Example 2: Reducing Cookie Lifetime

This example demonstrates reducing the comment cookie lifetime to one day.

	function weplugins_reduce_comment_cookie_lifetime($seconds) {
		return 86400; // 1 day in seconds
	}
	add_filter( "comment_cookie_lifetime", "weplugins_reduce_comment_cookie_lifetime", 10, 1 );

Example 3: Conditional Cookie Lifetime

This example sets the cookie lifetime based on user roles.

	function weplugins_conditional_comment_cookie_lifetime($seconds) {
		if ( current_user_can( 'administrator' ) ) {
			return 604800; // 1 week for admins
		}
		return 86400; // 1 day for others
	}
	add_filter( "comment_cookie_lifetime", "weplugins_conditional_comment_cookie_lifetime", 10, 1 );
