override_load_textdomain filter

Filters whether to override the .mo file loading.

To use override_load_textdomain filter, first, you have to register it using add_filter. You can write this code into the functions.php of your activated theme or in a custom WordPress Plugin.

At WePlugins, we always prefer to create a custom WordPress Plugin while using hooks so nothing breaks when you update your WordPress Theme in the future.

In the below live example, we have defined a function modify_override_load_textdomain_defaults which takes 3 parameters, and we registered it using add_filter. The first parameter override_load_textdomain is the name of the hook, the second parameter modify_override_load_textdomain_defaults is the name of the function that needs to be called, the third parameter is the priority of calling the hook if the same hook is used multiple times, and the last parameter is the number of arguments (if any) to be passed in the registered function.

Sometime, you need to remove a registered hook, so you can use remove_filter to remove override_load_textdomain filter.

Parameters

Below are the 3 parameters required to use this hook.

  • $override: (bool) Whether to override the .mo file loading. Default false.
  • $domain: (string) Text domain. Unique identifier for retrieving translated strings.
  • $mofile: (string) Path to the MO file.

Live Example

apply_filters( 'override_load_textdomain', bool $override, string $domain, string $mofile )

Below is an example of how you can use this hook.

    function weplugins_modify_override_load_textdomain_defaults($override, $domain, $mofile) {
        // Update the $override variable according to your website requirements and return this variable. You can modify the $override variable conditionally too if you want.
        return $override;
    }
    // add the filter
    add_filter( "override_load_textdomain", "weplugins_modify_override_load_textdomain_defaults", 10, 3 );

Example 1: Basic Usage

Here is how to modify the behavior of loading .mo files for specific domains.

    function weplugins_modify_override_basic($override, $domain, $mofile) {
        if ($domain === 'my-text-domain') {
            $override = true; // Logic to override
        }
        return $override;
    }
    add_filter('override_load_textdomain', 'weplugins_modify_override_basic', 10, 3);

Example 2: Conditional Override

Let’s say you want to override only if a certain condition is met, like checking if a specific plugin is active.

    function weplugins_modify_override_conditional($override, $domain, $mofile) {
        if (is_plugin_active('some-plugin/some-plugin.php') && $domain === 'another-text-domain') {
            $override = true;
        }
        return $override;
    }
    add_filter('override_load_textdomain', 'weplugins_modify_override_conditional', 10, 3);

Example 3: Remove a Hook

To remove a hook callback, use the example below.

    remove_filter("override_load_textdomain", "weplugins_modify_override_load_textdomain_defaults", 10, 3);

Please ensure to provide the same callback function name, priority, and number of arguments while removing the hook callback.
