pingback_useragent filter
Filters the user agent sent when pinging-back a URL.
To use the pingback_useragent filter, first, you have to register it using add_filter. You can write this code into the functions.php of your activated theme or in a custom WordPress Plugin.
WePlugins always prefers to create a custom WordPress Plugin while using hooks so nothing breaks when you update your WordPress Theme in the future.
In the below live example, we have defined a function modify_pingback_useragent_defaults which takes 5 parameters and we registered it using add_filter. The first parameter pingback_useragent is the name of the hook, the second parameter modify_pingback_useragent_defaults is the name of the function which needs to be called, the third parameter is the priority of calling the hook if the same hook is used multiple times, and the last parameter is the number of arguments (if any) to be passed in the registered function.
Sometimes, you have to remove a registered hook, so you can use remove_filter to remove the pingback_useragent filter.
Parameters
Below are the 5 parameters required to use this hook.
- $concat_useragent : (string) The user agent concatenated with ‘ — WordPress/’ and the WordPress version.
- $useragent : (string) The useragent.
- $pingback_server_url : (string) The server URL being linked to.
- $pagelinkedto : (string) URL of the page linked to.
- $pagelinkedfrom : (string) URL of the page linked from.
Live Example
apply_filters( 'pingback_useragent', string $concat_useragent, string $useragent, string $pingback_server_url, string $pagelinkedto, string $pagelinkedfrom )
Below is an example of how you can use this hook.
Example 1: Basic Usage
This example demonstrates the basic usage of the pingback_useragent filter.
function weplugins_modify_pingback_useragent_defaults($concat_useragent, $useragent, $pingback_server_url, $pagelinkedto, $pagelinkedfrom) { // Update the $concat_useragent variable according to your website requirements and return this variable. You can modify the $concat_useragent variable conditionally too if you want. return $concat_useragent; } // add the filter add_filter( "pingback_useragent", "weplugins_modify_pingback_useragent_defaults", 10, 5 );
Example 2: Custom User Agent
In this example, we modify the user agent string to include custom text.
function weplugins_custom_pingback_useragent($concat_useragent, $useragent, $pingback_server_url, $pagelinkedto, $pagelinkedfrom) { $concat_useragent .= ' -- CustomUserAgent'; return $concat_useragent; } // add the filter add_filter( "pingback_useragent", "weplugins_custom_pingback_useragent", 10, 5 );
Example 3: Conditional User Agent Modification
This example shows how to modify the user agent string based on the server URL.
function weplugins_conditional_pingback_useragent($concat_useragent, $useragent, $pingback_server_url, $pagelinkedto, $pagelinkedfrom) { if (strpos($pingback_server_url, 'example.com') !== false) { $concat_useragent .= ' -- ExampleSiteUserAgent'; } return $concat_useragent; } // add the filter add_filter( "pingback_useragent", "weplugins_conditional_pingback_useragent", 10, 5 );
To remove a hook callback, use the example below.
remove_filter( "pingback_useragent", "weplugins_modify_pingback_useragent_defaults", 10, 5 );
Please make sure to provide the same callback function name, priority, and number of arguments while removing the hook callback.
