register_new_user action

Fires after a new user registration has been recorded.

To use register_new_user action, first, you have to register it using add_action. You can write this code into functions.php of your activated theme or in a custom WordPress Plugin.

We at WePlugins always prefer to create a custom WordPress Plugin while using hooks so nothing breaks when you update your WordPress Theme in the future.

In the below live example, we have defined a function weplugins_execute_on_register_new_user_event which takes 1 parameter and we registered using add_action. The first parameter register_new_user is the name of the hook, the second parameter weplugins_execute_on_register_new_user_event is the name of the function which needs to be called, the third parameter is the priority of calling the hook if the same hook is used multiple times and the last parameter is the number of arguments (if any) to be passed in the registered function.

Sometimes, you have to remove a registered hook so you can use remove_action to remove register_new_user action.

Parameters

    Below the 1 parameter is required to use this hook.

  • $user_id : (int) ID of the newly registered user.

Live Example

do_action('register_new_user', int $user_id)

Below is an example of how you can use this hook.

Example 1: Basic Usage

In this example, we execute a function when a new user registers.

    function weplugins_execute_on_register_new_user_event($user_id) {
        // Code to be executed when this action occurs in WordPress.
        // Use the parameters received in the function arguments & implement custom functionality.
    }
    // Add the action
    add_action('register_new_user', 'weplugins_execute_on_register_new_user_event', 10, 1);

Example 2: Sending a Welcome Email

This example sends a welcome email to the newly registered user.

    function weplugins_send_welcome_email($user_id) {
        $user_info = get_userdata($user_id);
        $email = $user_info->user_email;
        wp_mail($email, 'Welcome to Our Site!', 'Thank you for registering.');
    }
    // Add the action
    add_action('register_new_user', 'weplugins_send_welcome_email', 10, 1);

Example 3: Adding User to a Custom Group

This example adds a newly registered user to a custom group.

    function weplugins_add_user_to_custom_group($user_id) {
        // Assume we have a function that adds users to a group
        add_user_to_group($user_id, 'new_members');
    }
    // Add the action
    add_action('register_new_user', 'weplugins_add_user_to_custom_group', 10, 1);
